One Hour Sculptures Artist Statement 2007 Arising out of an impulse to balance and stack things together, and also out of an OCD attitude that cannot tolerate waste or failure of any sort, my one-hour sculptures are the result of a series of spontaneous yet meditative acts. Their intentions are to explore possibilities of regeneration for botched ideas or objects, and to examine the potential that exists within the limits of time and space. These were my limitations: one hour of time per day to use anything that happened to be lying around in my studio to create a sculpture-in-flux. Most often, the material of the sculptures happened to be fragments of previously-failed, pre-planned sculptures. After the hour was up, I stopped working on the sculpture. It was then photographed and dismantled. Most of these sculptures were never created again or shown to anyone, but seven of them were reconstructed for the solo show Meditations on Limitations at White Flag Projects in St. Louis, using the original materials and objects. The reality of being human forces one to make choices which alter and construct his or her own life. Waste, mistakes, and failure are just one part of the daily scraps we contend with. These particular objects are markers of one man's attempt to deal with the unsuccessful residue that is squeezed from everyday existence. |
